{"id":618,"date":"2010-05-14T20:08:46","date_gmt":"2010-05-14T20:08:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/optimumsportsperformance.com\/blog\/?p=618"},"modified":"2019-01-19T23:27:24","modified_gmt":"2019-01-19T23:27:24","slug":"packaging-your-training-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/optimumsportsperformance.com\/blog\/packaging-your-training-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Packaging Your Training Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, Physical Therapist and Strength Coach, Charlie Weingroff had a great post in his\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/charlieweingroff.com\/2010\/05\/density-based-program-design\/\" target=\"_blank\">blog<\/a>\u00a0about a discussion he,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/boddickerperformance.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Carson Boddicker<\/a>, and\u00a0I had regarding program design.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Check it out\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/charlieweingroff.com\/2010\/05\/density-based-program-design\/\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The discussion started with me questioning the need to add extra mobility work into the actual training session since it should have been addressed properly in the warm up.\u00a0 My idea was that we often throw so much at a client in the way of exercise intervention, that it may be better to just have them work on getting really really good at a few things.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, Charlie\u2019s reply was,\u00a0<em>\u201cit doesn\u2019t matter\u201d,\u00a0<\/em>as long as people are moving well, and that may mean that not everyone needs to be doing extra mobility work.\u00a0 I can respect that answer and it falls right in line with my overall philosophy on training:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Move Well \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Improve your overall movement and be able to own basic\/fundamental patterns.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Train Correctly &#8211;<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Use proper lifting technique and establish a program that allows for appropriate progression in exercise difficulty, volume, intensity, and frequency.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get Fit &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0This can mean different things to different people.\u00a0 To some it may mean losing body fat, while to others it may mean improving their vertical jump and sports performance. Honestly, whatever<strong>\u00a0get fit<\/strong>means to you, it doesn\u2019t really matter if you can\u2019t grasp the previous two points, as you wont be able to get there without good movement and a sound training program.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Charlie went on to give some program design examples, and the thing that is most important to me is where he places the word\u00a0<strong><em>need\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>in the training program.\u00a0 This\u00a0<em><strong>\u201cneed\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is based on the individual and will depend on what you have determined \u2013 based on\u00a0your assessment &#8211;\u00a0that the individuals\u00a0<em>weakest link\u00a0<\/em>is.<\/p>\n<p>In my opinion,\u00a0this is the most important part of Charlie\u2019s post, as it plays to the importance of individuality in a training program.\u00a0\u00a0<em>One size does not fit all,\u00a0<\/em>and understanding your clients abilities are important.\u00a0 Many develop their training programs in a general way that has every client performing the same mobility drill (be it hip mobility, t-spine mobility, ankle mobility, etc).\u00a0 I have done this same thing before in the past as well and the most important thing I learned is that, when I did it this way\u2026I missed people!\u00a0 People may all have the same general needs \u2013 hip mobility issues, t-spine mobility issues, etc \u2013 but the reason those areas are problems may be different for each person.\u00a0 Having our assessment govern the clients\u00a0<strong><em>need\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>is a better way, in my opinion, to get that client moving as best they can.\u00a0\u00a0 After all, you have to move well first!<\/p>\n<p>This leads nicely into a blog that I should have\u00a0posted next week\u00a0titled,<strong>\u201cWhy Even Bother Assessing?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, Physical Therapist and Strength Coach, Charlie Weingroff had a great post in his\u00a0blog\u00a0about a discussion he,\u00a0Carson Boddicker, and\u00a0I had regarding program design.
