{"id":506,"date":"2010-07-20T07:04:24","date_gmt":"2010-07-20T07:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/optimumsportsperformance.com\/blog\/?p=506"},"modified":"2019-01-19T23:27:13","modified_gmt":"2019-01-19T23:27:13","slug":"what-gets-measured-gets-managed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/optimumsportsperformance.com\/blog\/what-gets-measured-gets-managed\/","title":{"rendered":"What gets measured gets managed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u201cWhat gets measured, gets managed\u201d\u00a0<\/em>was a quote that Jon Torine, Head Strength Coach for the Colts, used during his lecture at the\u00a0<a title=\"NSCA National Convention Review\" href=\"https:\/\/optimumsportsperformance.com\/blog\/nsca-national-convention-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">NSCA National Conference<\/a>\u00a0to emphasize the importance of using objective testing in the training process.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, if something is important, you need to measure it.\u00a0 Determine what is important to you \u2013 deadlifts, squats, cleans, bench press, movement tests, 10yrd dash, vertical jump, etc.\u00a0 If you measure it, you will attempt to manage and improve upon\u00a0it.\u00a0 If something goes unmeasured, you have less chance of knowing if you are making progress or not.\u00a0\u00a0Making it difficult to sustain a well developed training system.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about this quote today as I rolled into the facility to do some soft tissue work on my first client.\u00a0 I was thinking to myself how most massage therapists are in a rush to get people on the table and\u00a0<em>\u201cdo work\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If we aren\u2019t measuring anything, how do we know if we are being effective?\u00a0 How do we know that we are getting what we want from our treatment?\u00a0 Are we only relying on subjective information provided from our clients,\u00a0<em>\u201cYes, that feels a little bit better.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Or are we actually making some improvements in how things work \u2013 Do they function better?\u00a0\u00a0Move better? Walk better?\u00a0\u00a0Has joint mobility and end feel improved?\u00a0 Was there a change in the soft tissue texture and pliability?<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat gets measured, gets managed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Take some time out of your treatment session to assess things and see what you can improve on.\u00a0 If you measure something, it will help you put together a treatment plan and hopefully yield favorable results when the session comes to an end.\u00a0 Additionally, if the results were less than favorable you at least have somethings to think about for next time and you will be sure not to repeat the same approach.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t think of your soft tissue\/massage work as 60min. of just rubbing lotion on people.\u00a0 Rather, consider it a dance between some manual work, re-test\/evaluate, work again, and repeat.\u00a0 Each time, trying to manage that which has been measured.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhat gets measured, gets managed\u201d\u00a0was a quote that Jon Torine, Head Strength Coach for the Colts, used during his lecture at the\u00a0NSCA National Conference\u00a0to emphasize the importance of using objective testing in the training process.
