{"id":1825,"date":"2020-08-24T13:30:21","date_gmt":"2020-08-24T13:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/optimumsportsperformance.com\/blog\/?p=1825"},"modified":"2020-08-24T13:30:21","modified_gmt":"2020-08-24T13:30:21","slug":"tidyx-24-waffle-plots-shiny-apps-and-wide-receiver-target-shares","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/optimumsportsperformance.com\/blog\/tidyx-24-waffle-plots-shiny-apps-and-wide-receiver-target-shares\/","title":{"rendered":"TidyX 24: Waffle Plots, Shiny Apps, and Wide Receiver Target Shares"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ellis_hughes\">Ellis Hughes<\/a><\/strong><\/span> and I break down code that <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JaredBraggins\/status\/1296007801701986304\">Jared Braggins<\/a><\/span><\/strong> wrote to construct waffle plots describing plant extinction in Africa using data from <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/rfordatascience\/tidytuesday\">TidyTuesday<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For those that are unfamiliar, a waffle plot is a great way for showing counts of data and the relative contribution of one value to a group. This type of plot lends itself well to the number of targets each receiver on an NFL team receives relative to other receivers on that team. So, we took Jared&#8217;s idea, used the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>{waffle}<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">package, and constructed our own waffle plot. We then extended this out into an interactive <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>{shiny}<\/strong><\/span> app so that the user can select a team of interest and get returned back a waffle plot for that team along with a team of data providing the receiver statistics for that given season.
