I have osteoarthritis and a limited range of motion in one knee.

When I first start to squat I hear a crunchy sound from my knee (no pain) and after a while it goes away.  A friend suggested that this was scar tissue from previous surgeries and past injuries.

If this is scar tissue, can it be limiting my range of motion?

Can it limit your ROM, sure.  Is it limiting your ROM, who knows?  Is it?  Have you seen a loss of ROM in that knee?  Are there issues with it?

I have seen a loss of ROM over the last 10-15 years (slowly over time).  I enjoy hiking but the limited ROM makes it harder for me to hike down rocky trails; stepping down from rocks is tough on the knee.

Just looking for ideas to help increase ROM.

Have you been evaluated by a physical therapist or orthopedic surgeon?  The last thing you want to do is go in and start forcing ranges of motion without knowing if there is something that may be structurally wrong with the joint itself.
