Breathing Patterns Part 2: Assessments

In Part 1 of this series I briefly went over some of the negative things that can happen to the body when healthy breathing is not observed.

In this installment, Strength Coach Carson Boddicker joins me as I describe a few breathing assessment techniques that you can use when evaluating your clients.

Proper breathing, while often overlooked in the Strength and Conditioning world, is essential to quality movement.  Hopefully you find these assessments useful.

Patrick, Carson,

Great info on breathing. The article on the impacts and video on assessment were very informative. I have not seen this topic covered as concisely or as thorough at other sports performance sites. I am looking forward to the next posting on this subject.

Thanks,
Mitchell

Very high quality assessments guys! This brings me back to my cardiopulmonary classes years back regarding breathing assessments. Keep up the great work!

Good stuff.! What do you do for correction?

Thank you, Marcus. The assessments are actually the corrections as well (sorry, I wasn’t very clear about that). You need to cue the person into better breathing. Once they can perform it properly, teach them to perform an abdominal brace with appropriate breathing (not holding the breath), and then integrate it into overall movement.
